Polarized Neutron Set-up with Variable Energy and Resolution and High Polarization and Intensity

A polarized neutron set-up is proposed with a focusing curved mirror system to increase the intensity and to obtain an electronically adjustable energy and energy resolution. The set-up consists of 3 curved neutron mirror systems with 2 Drabkin monochromators in between. The 3 mirror systems, necessary to optimize such a double Drabkin monochromator, in addition focus the neutron beam in 2 directions The polarization is analyzed,by one further mirror system together with a detector. The gain in intensity at the sample position is mainly determined by (a/9c)2 where a is the divergence at the sample position and 8C the critical angle of total reflection. The energy of the resulting beam is easily changed by varying the magnetic field in the Drabkin resonator which selects the appropriate energy by resonant spin flip. The energy resolution is changed easily by changing the number of zigzag periods of the resonator.
